Kalavu review: A neatly planned theft

The plot of Zee 5’s latest release, Kalavu, is held together by an incident of theft. Hence, the title. But there’s also another thread that connects the main characters of Kalavu together: Lies. It isn’t a coincidence that Kalavu opens with a couplet structured like a Thirukkural. The Thirukkural, in one of its verses, says that even a lie will be placed on par with the truth if it gives unblemished returns. The film begins with white lies: A son lies to his parents about drinking; a man lies to his friends to make them meet him. But as the plot unfolds, the lies grow darker and so does the intent. Kalavu acts as more of a reminder of our clandestine selves.

Silukkuvarpatti Singam Review: Another ‘fun’ film that isn’t fun

There are several tags that Kollywood uses to classify its films. The most exasperating of the lot has to be, ‘a fun, family entertainer’; especially when most of the films that come with this tag are neither fun, nor entertaining. Vishnu Vishal’s Silukkuvarpatti Singam is the latest to join this illustrious list of comedies that attempt to operate on the Sundar C formula from his Ullathai Allitha days — some mindless attempts at humour with a chaotic climax. This template has been refurbished so many times that Sundar C himself should considering putting it to rest (given it still brings us films like Kalakalappu 2). Ghajinikanth movie review: This Arya starrer is yet another string of cliches and outdated tropes

Ghajinikanth’s director Santhosh P Jayakumar has two films in his filmography – Hara Hara Mahadevaki and Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu. The two films have a lot in common – adult content, double meaning jokes and an A rating. With Ghajinikanth, it is clear that Santhosh is trying to subvert his image as an ‘A’ filmmaker — there is a small gimmick with the end credit card, in case we were in doubt about his image re positioning. Well, you could say he has accomplished his objective. There’s not much adult humour, at least in comparison to his previous outings. (Except for one objectifying ‘joke’ about a maid that I am too tired to outrage about. Hannah Gadsby gets its right. I identify with tired these days a lot.) But, there is nothing new about the film as well. There are several ways to keep the viewer engaged – it could be through the story, it’s characters, the writing or the filmmaking. Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu movie review: A strictly avoidable adult horror movie

The haunted house in Santhosh P Jayakumar’s Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu has a warning board that says ‘men strictly not allowed’. Theatres should have a similar warning sign for women who enter to watch the film. One might argue that the trailer might have given you enough warning and I do agree. In fact, the makers were kind enough to give another warning in the form a disclaimer where we are ‘advised’ to bring tissues in. I don’t need to explain why. No wonder, there were about four women in a 250 seater screen (which was full) on a working Friday afternoon.
